Superheroes Exhibit at the Met

Sunday I spent the better part of the day getting to and from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I went because I heard they had a superheroes exhibit. A quick look at the met’s site for the exhibit looked promising, although a fashion tie-in wouldn’t have been my first choice.
When I arrived, the exhibit was pretty much what I expected. The costumes were impressive.
If you go, chances are you’ll see:
- Toby Maguire’s Spider-man Costumes, both standard and black
- Christian Bale’s Dark Knight Batman Costume
- RDJ’s Iron Man Costume
- Christopher Reeve’s Superman Duds
- Michelle Pfeifer’s Catwoman Costume
- Wonder Woman’s Costume
- A Bunch of old comics including the first appearance of the hulk, Spider-man, X-Men, Punisher, etc.
My biggest critique for the exhibit was that the fashion aspect of it seemed a little forced, almost like it was an afterthought. The superhero costumes all had appropriate corresponding fashion designs next to them that were derivative of the hero’s costume designs. However, while there was plenty of information about the comics, there was very little relevant writing about the designers or their clothing lines. This was odd.
Despite this, the exhibit was worth it. I couldn’t help but feel like I was walking out of a holy place after being in the presence of Amazing Fantasy #15! (And then proceding to the Dalis and Hoppers as well)
Here are some relevant youtubes about the exhibit. The exhibit is around until the end of the month.
